I started writing this post about a year ago but never got around to posting it. I now feel it might be a little dated. A lot of people are now back to offices, though not quite in the same way as before. A lot of people are forced to go to office for attendance. Luckily for me Microsoft does not have any such companywide mandate like a bunch of our peers in the Greater Seattle Area region. I know of people who visit their respective offices close to midnight so that they can get the badge-in for that day and the next. Anyway, with that said, now let’s read what I had to say about No Meeting Fridays from a year ago…
It was March 2nd, 2020, a day etched in my memory as the last echo of the bustling office life at Microsoft. I was there, welcoming a new face to our team, blissfully unaware that it would mark the end of an era. Now, we’ve all settled into the ‘new normal,’ carving out workspaces in corners of our homes. Amidst this shift, an old concept has been reborn with vigor: No Meeting Fridays.
The Rebirth of No Meeting Fridays
Gone are the days when ‘Meeting Overload’ was the norm. We attempted to mimic the office vibe virtually, only to find ourselves drained. No Meeting Fridays emerged as our sanctuary, a pause in the chaos, an opportunity to breathe and rejuvenate.
Embracing the Silence
In the post-COVID world, No Meeting Fridays have taken on a new form. The once lively office is now a realm of silence, its corridors deserted, and the cafeteria — a shadow of its former self. Yet, there’s a serene beauty in this quiet.
Flexibility or Slack?
I often muse on the true impact of No Meeting Fridays. Are we fostering flexibility or merely slacking off? The answer lies in setting transparent goals and nurturing a culture rooted in trust.
The Hidden Perks
No Meeting Fridays offer more than just a break from back-to-back calls. They’re a haven for focused work, a playground for creativity, and a lab for strategic thought.
Staying Connected
Despite the distance, we strive for connection. Casual virtual coffees and digital collaboration keep our sense of community thriving.
A Shift in Perspective
Initially, I was a skeptic, feeding off the energy of office dynamics. Yet, I’ve grown to cherish the undisturbed focus that No Meeting Fridays afford.
Final Thoughts
No Meeting Fridays may not be the panacea for all workplace woes, but when approached with purpose, they can be a powerful tool for enhancing productivity and overall well-being in our constantly evolving work environment.
